Table 17 go Kamado!

(Not not a misspell of Commando but the egg style barbeque.)

When we created this blog we planned to rave (or rant) about our eating experiences. Sadly we lost our mojo just after I set it up and just about the time we got it back...lockdown happened!

So, we can't blog about going out but I can talk about the meals we're enjoying whilst we can't.

The local little German supermaket had an offer on a few weeks ago - a mini Kamado barbecue at half price and given that the original price was way below the branded versions to begin with it seemed too good to miss. I popped off to the shop at opening time and joined the queue in the early morning sunshine. Good thing that I did as the store only had two delivered and I got the last one. (Later on I find that many people have seen the offer,  realised it was a good one,  purchased the unit then put it on eBay to double their money)

I had to go elsewhere for non-instant charcoal, the instant sutff having accelerant added with can taint the food on cooking. But, we now have our kamado ready to go!

I needed to do a little bit of construction first - to put the legs/stand together but that was simple. Then I needed to find something to stand it on - the old garden table from the 'Swedish Embassy' (IKEA!) got dragged out from behind the shed but was not really strong enough given the weight of the barbie.

The table legs had to go and I replaced them with the paving slabs that we just have lying around the garden and put the table top onto them. Job done.

What to cook first?
Believe it or not, popcorn. I had to fire up the egg and let it burn hard for 30 mins per the instructions the first time it was to be used. Whilst there was so much heat left in the fire I grabbed a pan, butter and corns and let the heat do it's stuff.

Voila! Popcorn.
Proof of concept - but lots of work now for me to do to understand and control the heat...
